Reviews of 2008 Mouton-Rothschild Bordeaux Blend

John Perry, JJ Buckley
April 2009
A fantastic and full nose of blackberry jam, mineral and floral notes. Full-bodied, with exceptional purity of flavors. Lush and juicy on the palate with plenty of dark fruit flavors and a touch of minerality and spice on the finish. The tannins are integrating nicely and this has terrific length. A solid effort!

Mouton’s vineyard was harvested between October 2-15, and the wine possesses an unexpectedly high pH of 3.85 (high for this vintage, but normal for a riper year). Made from low yields of 34 hectoliters per hectare, it achieved a natural alcohol content of 13.2%, one of the highest ever for this estate. Made from 54% of the production, the 2008 Mouton Rothchild’s final blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot has resulted in an atypically sweeter, more direct and opulent, fleshy Mouton. Keep in mind that this cuvee, because of the high Cabernet Sauvignon content as well as the terroir, is often backward, structured, and nearly foreboding in its youth. However, I do not think the 2008 will behave in that manner. There is plenty of tannin and exceptional density and ripeness, but the tannins are velvety, and I was amazed by how charmingly forward and fleshy this wine already is. A deep purple color, sweet aromas of creme de cassis, smoke, cedar, and an unmistakable floral component (another characteristic of the Cabernet Sauvignon in 2008) are found in this precocious, succulent Mouton that should firm up and put on more weight with aging. My score is somewhat conservative because it is hard to forget their prodigious 2006, but the 2008 will provide far more enjoyment and pleasure over the near-term than the 2006. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035.

Initially, the wine seems austere, very mineral. It opens slowly, showing fruit that is definitely rich, offering velvet tannins. But there is also an iron hand in that velvet glove, because the structure then comes bursting through.

Shows violet and crushed berries, with lots of other floral and fruit character. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long finish. Very, very pretty. —J.S.

About 2008 Mouton-Rothschild Bordeaux Blend

About the Winery Mouton-Rothschild
"Chateau Mouton Rothschild has a magnificently complete expanse of vineyard on the slopes leading down to the Gironde Estuary. Mouton Rothschild is to the northwest of Pauillac...The famous Barons de Brane owned the already well known vineyard in the 18th and early 19th centuries when it was known as Chateau Brane-Mouton. It was purchased by Nathaniel de Rothschild of London in 1853 who renamed it to Chateau Mouton Rothschild, and is now owned by Philippine de Rothschild, his great-great granddaughter. Mouton always in the forefront of the greatest wines of Bordeaux, was the first estate to begin complete chateau-bottling of the harvest -- an historic step initiated in 1924 by the late Philippe de Rothschild. It is the only chateau in the Medoc Classification of 1855 to achieve reclassification. In 1973, it was finally moved from a second growth to a first. In 1926, he commissioned architect Charles Sicils to build the famous "Grand Chai". In 1962, Philippe de Rothschild created, with his wife Pauline, the Museum of Wine and Art", in which is displayed a priceless collection of exhibits relating to wine and the vine, from the dawn of civilization up to modern times."

About the Wine
"Opaque coloured wine, driven by a clean richness of fruits. Concentration is a keep factor here, but in a control manner. Long, powerful yet very gentle."
