Chateau Talbot, in the Saint-Julien appellation of the Medoc, is a fourth growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Its name originates from Connetable Talbot, a famous English soldier and governor of Guyenne, who was defeated at the battle of Castillon in 1453.

The 107 hectare vineyard is situated on the bank of the Gironde estuary on hilltops of alluvial gravel over a core of fossil-rich limestone. All but five hectares is planted to red wine grapes. The reds of Talbot are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (66%) which provides tannic structure and power. With 26% Merlot, the wines become rounder and more suave, while the Petit Verdot provides a delicate touch, like spices in fine cuisine.

The grand vin represents 50 to 60% of the estate’s production. The estate also produces a second wine, le Connetable Talbot, plus Seigneur de Talbot, designated primarily for the Chinese wine market, and one of the oldest white wines in the Medoc, Caillou Blanc.

The grand vin of Talbot is harvested by hand, with vinification in a combination of cone-shaped wooden vats and stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged for 14 months in 50 to 60 percent new barrels originating from eight different coopers. Renowned enologists Jacques Boissenot, Julien Lavenu and Stéphane Derenoncourt consult on the winemaking and blending.

Introducing the 1996 Talbot, a Bordeaux Blend from the prestigious St Julien region in France. This red wine is a true gem, showcasing the elegance and complexity that Bordeaux wines are renowned for. The 1996 vintage was particularly favorable in terms of weather, resulting in exceptional fruit quality and a wine that has aged beautifully.

In the glass, the 1996 Talbot reveals a rich claret hue, exuding an air of sophistication. The nose is immediately captivated by enticing aromas of blackberry, licorice, and a hint of light tar. These complex scents intertwine, offering a sensory experience that promises a remarkable tasting journey.

On the palate, this full-bodied wine unveils its true character. Chewy tannins provide a sturdy structure, while the rich black fruits take center stage, dancing effortlessly over a bed of air. The acidity of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes takes flight, adding a refreshing and mouthwatering quality to the wine. It is this poise and confidence that truly sets the 1996 Talbot apart.

As the wine develops, its long finish lingers, leaving a lasting impression. The depth and balance achieved in this vintage are remarkable, showcasing the true essence of St Julien. This wine is not about intensity and power, but rather about complexity and elegance while still retaining its fruit-forward nature.

Renowned wine critics have also recognized the excellence of the 1996 Talbot. Wine Spectator awarded it an impressive 91 points, praising its blackberry, licorice, and tarry aromas, as well as its chewy tannins and long finish. Decanter, on the other hand, awarded it an outstanding 93 points, emphasizing its enjoyable and signature St-Julien characteristics of rich black fruits and mouthwatering acidity.

The 1996 Talbot is a wine that demands attention and appreciation. It is a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of Talbot, showcasing the true potential of Bordeaux blends from the St Julien region. This wine is ready to be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve and enchant for many years to come.
