Lovely nose with real complexity. There’s real life, lift and a sort of dancing quality in this delicious combination of super-ripe vintage and the more restrained style of a high altitude estate. A dry finish at the moment. 18.5/20

Costanti’s 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva presents a very elegant style that reconciles modern and traditional styles with unusual grace and beauty. A translucent red, it reveals terrific detail and purity in its tobacco, ripe red cherries, tar, smoke and spices. This medium-bodied Brunello will benefit from another two years or so of bottle age and should drink well for another decade. It is a terrific effort. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019. I

Shows bright, almost floral aromas, with plum and cherry undertones. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe fruit, silky tannins and a long, bright aftertaste of citrus and berry. Tight and structured. Still needs time. Best after 2010. 1,050 cases made. –JS
