Sweet pure and completely classic mostly red pinot fruit aromas are enhanced by subtle nuances of floral notes damp earth underbrush and even a hint of game. The big muscular but utterly refined flavors are superbly intense reserved and backward supported by remarkably sophisticated tannins and stunning length. This is a very concentrated wine of real breed and impeccable balance that should age for 3 decades perhaps longer. The transparency is better in the 2001 but there is a bit more mid-palate concentration in the 2002. A choice qualitatively speaking.

The aromas of red berry and cocoa powder are fleeting, with red fruits and spice on the palate. A wine of finesse and medium weight, showing elegance and harmony. Offers a fine, lingering aftertaste.--Non-blind 2002 DRC tasting (February 2005). Best from 2014 through 2030. — BS

Initial animal, rustic aromas blow away after a few minutes. On the palate, pure fruits are dominant, just hinting at some of the typical 2004 pepper character. It's a spicy, complex wine, with excellent acidity right through the finish, and always firm. ROGER VOSS
