TheWineCellarInsider.com, October 2023

Surprisingly fresh, texturally, the wine is opulent, silky, and showy on the palate, but the nose is not overripe. Instead, you find dark red berries, licorice, smoke, and perhaps touches of a robusto cigar wrapper. There...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, August 2014

The spectacular 2003 Leoville Poyferre exhibits a dense purple color with a touch of lightening at the edge as well as notes of creosote, barbecue smoke, jammy black currants, licorice and spice box. This intense...

(95 points) I love the rich and opulent nose to this with flowers, plums and currants. Full and powerful with great freshness and balance. Still a little tight, yet dense and intense. Wonderful wine through and through...

Wine Spectator, March 2006

Pure cassis on the nose. Impressive. Full-bodied thick and powerful with loads of fruit and big velvety tannins. Goes on for minutes on the palate. Huge wine. Very very impressive. This is one of the big surprises of the...

janeanson.com, July 2021

A Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend, this is young, still knittted down but extremely charming, and again very classic, more so than you might expect from a vintage with this heat during the growing season. Plenty of...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2006

(93 points) A huge, opulent wine that packs sweet, rich tannins and spicy fruit. In the midst of all this decadence, though, is a kernel of tannic dryness. This estate, long the weakest of the three Lèoville wines, is now...

Vinous, September 2022

The 2003 Léoville-Poyferré has always been one of this infamous vintage’s success stories. Perhaps in recent years it has lost some of its vigour on the nose with black plum, brown spices, leather and that light Bovril...

With origins dating back to 1638, Saint Julien's expansive Leoville estate was the largest vineyard in all the Medoc at the time of the French Revolution. After various successions and changes, the estate was eventually divided into the three Leoville properties we know today: Leoville-Las-Cases, Leoville-Barton, and Leoville-Poyferre, established in 1840. The outstanding quality of Leoville Poyferre wines gained early recognition when it was ranked second growth in the 1855 Classification.

The various divisions throughout the history of the estate have split the vineyards of Leoville-Poyferre into five large areas. They include all the main types of gravely, well-drained soils present in Saint Julien and a balanced environment for the vines. This diversity contributes to the wines magnitude and complexity.

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre was most recently acquired in 1920 by the Cuvelier family. Didier Cuvelier has presided over the destiny of this gem since 1979. Chateau Moulin-Riche (from a specific terroir) and Pavillon de Leoville-Poyferre (from younger plots of vines) are also produced at the estate.

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre is elegant, finely balanced and complex with intense color, velvety texture and excellent aging potential.
