Decanter, March 2021

The 2005 is taking its time to fully come around and this will still improve over the next five to 10 years, but it is starting to live up to expectations. Packed with truffles, tar, and cigar box, soy, black tea...

A fabulous GPL. Perhaps better than the legendary 1982? It shows laser-guide precision on the palate with aromas of currants, cedar, mint, flowers and chocolate. Full-bodied and extremely finely textured on the palate...

One of the 2005s that I have drunk most regularly, and it always delivers. Still on top form for this tasting, dark ruby in colour, primary in its fruit expression. Tightrope balance of fruit and tannins, just emerging...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, February 2015

The Château Grand Puy Lacoste 2005 has a brilliant, classic pencil-lead nose that is Pauillac through and through. There is no messin’ about here. The palate is very well defined with wonderful acidity, great depth of...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2023

This estate's finest wine of the decade is the 2005 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, a fleshy, sumptuous wine evocative of cassis, sweet red berries and cigar box, framed by a touch of creamy new oak that integrates with opening...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, June 2021

Clearly the best value in Pauillac today, this is classic in all the right ways. Expressive, yet stoic, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated, tannic and filled with tobacco-drenched creme de cassis, red plums, cedar, wet...

Wine Spectator, March 2008

Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste, one of the oldest properties in the Medoc, has a long history dating back to the 16th century. It was under ownership of a single family for generations, until sold by the Lacoste family in 1920 and finally acquired by the Borie family in 1978.

The name Grand-Puy comes from the ancient term “puy” which means “hillock, small height”. True to its name, the vineyard of Grand-Puy-Lacoste sits on outcrops that rise to around 20 meters above sea level.

Long before the 1855 Classification, Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste’s reputation was recognized for quality. In 1776, Saint Guirons & Lacoste (its name at that time) was ranked fifth in a classification of Pauillac estates by the King's Intendant in Aquitaine, Dupre de Saint-Maur. The estate’s reputation for quality grew and the Bordeaux Classification made the “fifth growth” ranking official, placing it among the “elite” of Bordeaux wines.

Since 1978, Francois-Xavier Borie has guided Grand-Puy-Lacoste's fortunes. Major investments were made and restorations and renovations were undertaken. 58 hectares of the estate’s 90 hectares are planted with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

Today, with the help of his eldest daughter, Emeline, Francois-Xavier Borie has raised Grand-Puy-Lacoste to the level of a "great Pauillac" and ensures that it maintains that status. Among Pauillac wines, Grand-Puy-Lacoste is considered "a great classic”, capable of aligning its consistent character with the spirit of each vintage.

The wines of Grand-Puy-Lacoste have a beautiful, deep color and the aromas are very pure and complex, subtle and refined. Depending on the vintage, one's first impression may be of ripe fruit or flowers, often toasted notes, spice and vanilla. With time it develops a remarkably full, rich character.

In the mouth one is struck by its elegant individuality. The flavors support and amplify its aromatic sensations with a notably large range of fruit, particularly cassis, which develops with age. The wines are well-built, with powerful tannic structure which never loses its silky smoothness.

By nature a wine for long aging, Grand-Puy-Lacoste needs between eight and ten years to reveal its full potential.

Introducing the exquisite 2005 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, a Bordeaux Blend that hails from the renowned Pauillac region of Bordeaux, France. This wine embodies the essence of elegance and sophistication, showcasing the remarkable craftsmanship of the esteemed producer, Grand-Puy-Lacoste.

Renowned wine critics have bestowed high praise upon this vintage. Wine Spectator awarded it an impressive score of 93 points, describing it as a "beautiful wine that's hard to keep your hands off now." Neal Martin's Wine Journal awarded it an outstanding 97 points, noting its classic pencil-lead nose and astonishingly precise finish. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it 92 points, praising its pure crème de cassis, licorice, and spice flavors.

James Suckling, another respected wine critic, compared this vintage to the legendary 1982, stating that it shows "laser-guide precision" with aromas of currants, cedar, mint, flowers, and chocolate. Meanwhile, Jeff Leve lauds it as the best value in Pauillac, emphasizing its expressive yet stoic nature.

Jane Anson, a highly regarded wine critic, considers the 2005 Grand-Puy-Lacoste as one of the wines she has consistently enjoyed. She describes it as tightrope balance between fruit and tannins, with notes of pencil lead, smoked earth, sandalwood, spice, eucalyptus, mint, and cassis. Anson believes this wine has the potential to age gracefully for up to 40 years.

Overall, the 2005 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a testament to the exceptional quality and timeless appeal of Bordeaux wines. With its refined character, remarkable complexity, and glowing reviews from esteemed critics, this wine is a true masterpiece that deserves a place in any discerning wine enthusiast's collection.
