Decanter, March 2022

You're getting the aged, mature aromas; cola, toffee, caramel, vanilla and blackcurrant. Slightly subdued on the palate. still knitted down but so well structured, this will age for years to come. The flavours fill the...

Classic, balanced, restrained, everything is knitted down and concentrated, with tannins that have grain and grip and will age for decades. Liqourice, chocolate shavings, cassis, enjoyable wine with edges of gourmet...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2011

One of the finest over-achieving efforts in this vintage as well as a "best buy" for a top-flight St.-Julien this 2008 is an irresistible success. It reveals an opaque ruby/purple color lots of unctuosity and a boatload...

Vinous, September 2022

The 2008 Léoville-Poyferré has long been one of the best Saint-Julien’s of the vintage. It has a vibrant, exquisitely delineated bouquet with precise black fruit, cedar and hints of liquorice that unfold seductively. The...

Wine Enthusiast, April 2011

Generous and ripe, obviously extracted, this is a wine that is packed with tannins sharpened with black fruits. Spice, wood and acidity add to the depth of flavor.

I am impressed with the fruit and velvety tannins. Full and deliciously fruity with soft tannins and rich fruit. Blueberry. Open and gorgeous. Impressive for the vintage.

TheWineCellarInsider.com, September 2018

With just a hint of age in its color, the wine is all about the cedar, tobacco, forest, licorice and dark red berry aromatics and concentrated, core of dark fruits, plush but firm tannins and chocolate. Even though you...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, February 2012

Tasted ex-château and single blind in Southwold. Didier Cuvelier's wine seems to be on an upward curve in bottles. It has a very attractive bouquet with cedar and tobacco aromas. A lovely "classic" Saint Julien nose. The...

Very direct with black currant and fig paste jumping out and driving all the way through the lightly muscular finish where extra iron espresso and charcoal notes fill in. An iron edge lingers. This needs a little time...

With origins dating back to 1638, Saint Julien's expansive Leoville estate was the largest vineyard in all the Medoc at the time of the French Revolution. After various successions and changes, the estate was eventually divided into the three Leoville properties we know today: Leoville-Las-Cases, Leoville-Barton, and Leoville-Poyferre, established in 1840. The outstanding quality of Leoville Poyferre wines gained early recognition when it was ranked second growth in the 1855 Classification.

The various divisions throughout the history of the estate have split the vineyards of Leoville-Poyferre into five large areas. They include all the main types of gravely, well-drained soils present in Saint Julien and a balanced environment for the vines. This diversity contributes to the wines magnitude and complexity.

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre was most recently acquired in 1920 by the Cuvelier family. Didier Cuvelier has presided over the destiny of this gem since 1979. Chateau Moulin-Riche (from a specific terroir) and Pavillon de Leoville-Poyferre (from younger plots of vines) are also produced at the estate.

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre is elegant, finely balanced and complex with intense color, velvety texture and excellent aging potential.

The 2008 Leoville-Poyferre is an exceptional Bordeaux Blend from the renowned St Julien region in Bordeaux, France. With a deep, opaque ruby/purple color, this wine is visually stunning and promises a remarkable tasting experience. The nose is incredibly complex, offering a symphony of aromas that captivate the senses. Ripe red fruits take the forefront, accompanied by notes of cedar, tobacco, and hints of undergrowth. It is a truly "classic" Saint Julien nose that is both elegant and enticing.

On the palate, this wine delivers in every aspect. It showcases good concentration, with smooth tannins that provide a luxurious mouthfeel. The flavors of sweet cassis and black cherry intertwine with nuances of licorice, smoke, and oak, creating a harmonious and multi-dimensional taste profile. The wine is full-bodied and remarkably pure, with a stunning texture that lingers on the palate. It is already drinking well but promises to evolve beautifully with 2-3 years of cellaring. With its impeccable balance and structure, this wine has the potential to age gracefully for 20-25 years.

The 2008 Leoville-Poyferre has received high praise from renowned wine experts. It has been described as an "irresistible success" and a "best buy" for a top-flight St.-Julien by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Wine Spectator awarded it an impressive score of 91, noting its directness and the persistence of black currant and fig paste flavors. Neal Martin's Wine Journal praises its balance and femininity, surpassing expectations. Vinous describes it as one of the best Saint-Julien's of the vintage, highlighting its vibrant bouquet and medium-bodied palate.

This wine has also been commended for its generous ripeness, concentration, and depth of flavor by Wine Enthusiast. James Suckling is impressed by the fruitiness and velvety tannins, noting its openness and gorgeousness. Decanter finds it totally gorgeous on the nose and praises its sex appeal, black chocolate, menthol, and mint flavors. Jeff Leve emphasizes the wine's cedar, tobacco, forest, licorice, and dark red berry aromatics, as well as its plush but firm tannins and chocolate notes. Jane Anson awards it an impressive score of 95, describing it as classic, balanced, and restrained, with tannins that have grain and grip and will age for decades.

Overall, the 2008 Leoville-Poyferre is a wine of exceptional quality and character. It showcases the best of what Bordeaux, specifically the St Julien region, has to offer. With its complexity, concentration, and long finish, it is a true winner that will undoubtedly impress even the most discerning wine connoisseurs. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for further development, it promises an unforgettable tasting experience.
