jamessuckling.com, June 2016

Decadent and rich on the nose with lots of ripe fruit and meaty undertones. Almost truffle-like. Full body, lots of ripe tannins and plenty of fruit. Still needs time to soften. Big and juicy for the vintage. Better in...

Decanter, January 2018

This is always one of the more polished expressions of Bordeaux, and at this stage they still had their foot a little more on the pedal than they do now. It's a beautiful wine with an intensity to the cassis fruits, a...

On the nose the oak is still noticeable, from there you move on to the truffle, smoke, black cherry and dark chocolate notes. Full bodied, concentrated, the tannins are soft, the texture is round, the fruits are sweet...

Wine Enthusiast, April 2011

An elegant wine smooth and rounded bringing out smoky fruits over tannins that smooth out as the fruit unfolds. Less opulent than some previous vintages the wine shows restraint and aging potential. - R.V.

As early as 1365, grapes have been grown on the property now known as Smith-Haut-Lafitte. Originally owned by the noble Bosq family, the estate was purchased in the 18th century by Scotsman George Smith. Its present name was taken from Smith and the Pessac region’s gravel plateau known as Lafitte.

In 1842, Mr. Duffour-Dubergier, mayor of Bordeaux and an enthusiastic winegrower, inherited Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte from his mother and brought the wine up to great growth status. The property changed hands again in 1958 when it was purchased by the Louis Eschenauer Company. After the Eschenaueur period came to an end, a great deal of money has been invested in the estate, particularly on the construction of a superb underground cellar holding over 1,000 barrels.

In 1990, Daniel Cathiard fell in love with the property and joined the list of prestigious owners, firmly intending to further enhance Smith-Haut-Lafitte's tradition of excellence. He combined the most modern winemaking techniques with age-old artisanal methods, including organic compost, small wooden vats, and lees-aging. Famous around the world for its wonderfully elegant red wine and the sophisticated bouquet of its white wine, Smith-Haut-Lafitte undoubtedly deserves the special care that is lavished on it.

The style of Smith-Haut-Lafitte red is classical, with a beautiful expression of Gunzian gravel terroir which gives it unique smoky notes. Elegant and structured, the red shows freshness, complexity, balance and richness.

The Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, harvested at full maturity and softly vinified to extract only the silkiest tannins, unveils its full potential after proper aging. The other grape varieties of the vineyard, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, add their own aromas and participate in the harmony of a great Cru Classe de Graves.

The 2008 Smith-Haut-Lafitte is a Bordeaux Blend from the esteemed Pessac Leognan region of Bordeaux, France. This red wine exudes elegance and finesse, showcasing the exceptional quality that this vintage has to offer. With a deep, dark purple color, it immediately captivates the eye and hints at the depth of flavors to come.

On the nose, this wine reveals a symphony of aromas. It opens with smoky notes, reminiscent of a barbecue pit, intertwining with sweet black currants and cherries. The bouquet is complex and enticing, drawing you in with each whiff.

As you take your first sip, the decadence of this wine unfolds on your palate. The ripe fruit flavors are abundant, accompanied by meaty undertones that add depth and complexity. The tannins are present, yet ripe, providing structure and balance to the wine. Despite its youth, this wine already displays impressive finesse, showcasing its potential for further development over the next 15 years or so.

Renowned wine critics have praised the 2008 Smith-Haut-Lafitte, recognizing its exceptional quality. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it a score of 92 points, acknowledging its surprising forward style and wonderful purity. James Suckling awarded an impressive 95 points, noting its richness and potential for further aging. Wine Spectator described it as an expressive red with intensity and grace, while Wine Enthusiast praised its elegance and aging potential.

This wine is a true reflection of the Smith-Haut-Lafitte estate's commitment to producing exceptional wines. With its polished expression of Bordeaux and its ability to balance power with finesse, the 2008 Smith-Haut-Lafitte is a wine that will captivate wine enthusiasts and collectors alike. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for future enjoyment, this wine is sure to impress with its depth, complexity, and sheer beauty.
