jamessuckling.com, October 2020

A very rich, layered red with blackberry, fresh mushroom and some hazelnut. It’s full-bodied, layered and extremely intense. Velvety and chewy tannins. Still extremely powerful and young. Last tasted in 2015. Better after...

Wine Enthusiast, June 2011

(94-96) A very structured wine, retaining great acidity and freshness. The tannins cut right to the heart of the wine. The aftertaste is solid and chunky.

Decanter, January 2023

A great Margaux from this classic vintage. Complete, rounded on the palate with great purity of flavour and complex aromas in the glass. Mineral, lead-pencil notes emerge, adding freshness despite the concentration and...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2013

Sweet blackberry, plum, dark cherries, earth, vanilla, truffle and jammy scents create the inviting perfume. The wine is medium/full bodied, refined, elegant and fresh, ending with an intense spicy, cassis, cocoa and...

Inky black cherry in colour, clearly ripe fruit that has been carefully extracted. Tension and precision, with black chocolate, slate, earth, smoked caramel and juicy blackberry fruits. This could be drunk now, but you...

View From The Cellar, March 2011

The 2010 d’Issan is an excellent example of the vintage and one of the top wines in Margaux this year. The bouquet is deep, pure and classic, as it offers up scents of sweet cassis, tobacco leaf, a touch of tariness...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, March 2014

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The d'Issan 2010 has a fine blackcurrant and iodine scented bouquet with well-integrated oak. There is fine lift here - a smooth operator. The palate is medium-bodied...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2020

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 D'Issan opens with baked blackberries, blackcurrant jelly and stewed plums scents with hints of bouquet garni and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is bright and refreshing with...

Vinous, March 2021

The 2010 Château d’Issan has a very intense bouquet with layers of black fruit interlaced with wild hedgerow, touches of iodine and brine that I noticed on the same bottle a couple of years ago. This still requires a...

Wine Spectator, March 2013

This red offers a grippy, charcoal-laced feel, cloaked by very fleshy plum, currant and blackberry confiture flavors. The long, tarry spine drives the finish, with extra bay leaf, maduro tobacco and warm stone notes. A...

Chateau d’Issan is located in the center of the Margaux appellation and rated as a third growth in the official Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Mild weather, moderated by proximity to the sea and the Gironde Estuary, provides ideal conditions for vine growth. The vines are, on average, 35 years old. The estate has 44 hectares of vines in Margaux, 5 in Haut-Medoc and 10 in Bordeaux Superieur.

Chateau d’Issan has a long history dating back to the 12th century when it was a fiefdom with the name of La Mothe-Cantenac. It already had an established reputation long before the 1855 classification, reportedly served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henri Plantagenet, future King of England, on 18th May 1152.

The estate has been handed down from generation to generation through inheritance and marriage until from 1575 onwards, it has been owned by five generations of the Essenault family who contracted their name and renamed the property “Issan”.

Chateau d’Issan expresses the exquisite bouquet so characteristic of Margaux, and stands out for its suppleness, subtlety, elegance and long aging potential.

The wine is made from the old vines in the Chateau d’Issan enclosure in the middle of the Margaux appellation. The soil is mainly comprised of surface gravel on a clay subsoil, contributing to optimal ripeness and freshness in the estate’s two grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The wine is aged in barrels for 16 to 18 months, half of which are new.

The 2010 d'Issan is a Bordeaux Blend from the renowned Margaux region of Bordeaux, France. This wine exudes elegance and sophistication, capturing the essence of its prestigious terroir. With a deep garnet color, it immediately captivates the eye, inviting you to delve into its complexities.

On the nose, the 2010 d'Issan reveals a beautiful bouquet of red currant, cherry, and loganberry. These vibrant aromas are intertwined with subtle hints of coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and Asian spice, creating a truly captivating olfactory experience.

Upon tasting, this wine showcases a wealth of complex flavors. Layers of darker notes unfold on the palate, including coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and Asian spice. There is a remarkable texture and structure to this wine, with lushness and freshness seamlessly intertwined. The 2010 d'Issan is a true testament to the exceptional quality of the vintage, boasting a balance between power and finesse.

Notable wine critics have recognized the excellence of the 2010 d'Issan. Alex Lallos of JJ Buckley awarded it an impressive score of 96, praising its texture, structure, and freshness. Neal Martin's Wine Journal blind tasting awarded it a score of 93, affirming its finesse and complexity. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also bestowed a score of 93, noting its bright and refreshing palate.

This wine has the potential for long-term aging, with James Suckling suggesting it will be even better after 2023. John Gilman from View From The Cellar predicts it will reach its peak between 2022 and 2075. With its firm yet well-integrated tannins, the 2010 d'Issan promises to evolve and develop over the next few decades.

In conclusion, the 2010 d'Issan is a top-notch wine that exemplifies the Margaux terroir. Its elegance, complexity, and aging potential make it a standout choice for wine enthusiasts seeking a truly exceptional Bordeaux experience.
