jamessuckling.com, November 2013

A wine with great structure and muscular tone. It is full-bodied with chewy tannins that remain polished and very pretty. The length and fruit are fantastic; it goes on for minutes. Pure merlot. Better in 2016.

Wine Enthusiast, July 2015

Earthy aromas of tilled soil, truffle, leather, black cherry and cedar lead the nose on this rich but elegant wine. The concentrated, smooth palate delivers juicy blackberry, black currant, freshly ground peppercorn...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2016

The 2010 Messorio is another superstar in this blockbuster vertical of Italian Merlot greatness. This was a hot vintage that has resulted in a softly contoured and more immediate wine. You can either drink it in the near...

Wine & Spirits, April 2014

You might be tempted to drink this merlot on release, to enjoy its prodigious richness, its scent of freshly turned earth and the potent juiciness of the fruit, a tight kernel of purple flavor that expands even as the...

Wine Spectator, April 2014

A pure version, evoking cherry and plum fruit shaded by oak spice and smoke accents. This is firm, supported by a backbone of acidity and tannins. Tightly wound, this needs time and should develop over the long haul...

Le Macchiole is an estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany on the Etruscan Coast. Founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolini and Cinzia Merli, the estate has 24 hectares of organically farmed vineyards producing 5 single-variety wines: Paleo Bianco, Bolgheri Rosso, Paleo Rosso, Scrio and Messorio. It was a risky decision to produce single-varietal wines when neighbors such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso were achieving world-renown for their Super Tuscan Bordeaux blends. But with commitment and determination, they achieved the esteem and recognition deserving of the series of their stunning wines.

Sadly, Eugenio passed away and did not live to see the result of his work but his legacy is continued by his wife Cinzia who works devotedly in the vineyards to demonstrate the purity and unique interpretation of Le Macchiole wines.
