The 2010 Gouges Vaucrains is going to be a dynamite wine in the fullness of time, but at age five, this is still very much a puppy. The youthfully reticent nose delivers scents of cherries, pomegranate, venison, nutskin, a beautifully complex base of soil, woodsmoke and a dollop of fresh herbs in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very soil-driven in personality, with outstanding mid-palate depth, suave, ripe tannins, great focus and grip and a very, very long, nascently complex and ho, so promising finish. All this great wine requires is time in the cellar.
