There is an austerity to the tannins and the wine needs a few more years in bottle to really settle down, although you can begin now with a good long carafe. Inky ruby in colour, dark berry fruits infused with cappucino...

Decanter, November 2018

Controlled power, gorgeous complexity – a really beautiful wine. The tannins feel fine, well expressed and well balanced, holding the fruit without strangling it, with a gorgeous touch of St-Julien flair and finesse. An...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, April 2012

(NM92-94 points) The Chateau Leoville Poyferre is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon 30% Merlot 6% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc picked between 19th September and 1st October sorted by optical machine. Astonishingly...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2014

This property, which has been on a qualitative tear over the last generation, has produced one of the most successful wines of 2011. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet...

Wine Enthusiast, February 2014

This is a really fruity wine that's opulent and gorgeously rich. There is a pepper edge, touches of new wood and a firm, dark core. Acidity and concentration are already integrated. Drink from 2018.

jamessuckling.com, February 2014

Blackberry and currant aromas with hints of minerals. Full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Chewy and reserved. Just the right amount of fruit covering the tannins. Harmony for the vintage. Better in 2017.

TheWineCellarInsider.com, February 2014

Leoville Poyferre is on fire. Producing a wine this good in 2011 is really saying something. The complex nose of truffle, smoke, black cherry nd earth lets you know the wine is good. If that did not seal the deal, the...

Wine Spectator, March 2014

Shows a warm charcoal note from the start, backed by melted fig, crushed blackberry and steeped black currant fruit. A strong graphite edge pins down the finish. Dark in profile, but defined and well-suited to mid-term...

Vinous, April 2022

The 2011 Léoville Poyferré has a ripe bouquet with blackberry, boysenberry, graphite and pressed flower scents. Quite open and more fruit-driven than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, quite fine...

With origins dating back to 1638, Saint Julien's expansive Leoville estate was the largest vineyard in all the Medoc at the time of the French Revolution. After various successions and changes, the estate was eventually divided into the three Leoville properties we know today: Leoville-Las-Cases, Leoville-Barton, and Leoville-Poyferre, established in 1840. The outstanding quality of Leoville Poyferre wines gained early recognition when it was ranked second growth in the 1855 Classification.

The various divisions throughout the history of the estate have split the vineyards of Leoville-Poyferre into five large areas. They include all the main types of gravely, well-drained soils present in Saint Julien and a balanced environment for the vines. This diversity contributes to the wines magnitude and complexity.

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre was most recently acquired in 1920 by the Cuvelier family. Didier Cuvelier has presided over the destiny of this gem since 1979. Chateau Moulin-Riche (from a specific terroir) and Pavillon de Leoville-Poyferre (from younger plots of vines) are also produced at the estate.

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre is elegant, finely balanced and complex with intense color, velvety texture and excellent aging potential.
