95+ Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2012 Shiraz 1843 Freedom is profoundly scented of crushed blackberries, black cherries and mulberries with suggestions of cedar, spice box, black pepper and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, the oak is standing out at this youthful stage though the intensity of fruit and firm backbone of grainy tannins and lively acid suggest this should marry with time and emerge a harmonious wine possessing glorious complexity. Concentrated black truffle, pencil chalk, forest soil and green pepper on the nose. Roasted-red-paprika with cooked-fresh-strawberry sweetness develops the complexity. Less new oak would make this close to 95 points. Drink now or by 2016. - Nick Stock
