Wine Enthusiast, March 2016

With a higher proportion of Merlot (92%) than usual, this is a round, ripe wine released at just 20% of normal production. The generous texture and tannins are well integrated into the rich fruit. It’s juicy, broad...

Decanter, February 2023

Alexandre Thienpont is proud of the 'cashmere' quality of his Cabernet Franc, but it scarcely entered the blend in 2013. Instead the Merlot supplies solid cherry aromas, a suave and concentrated palate with moderate...

janeanson.com, February 2022

At Vieux Chateau Certan, production of the top wine fell by 75% in this vintage, after extreme selection by owner Alexandre Thienpont. At 10 years old, it retains a dark ruby colour and shows balance and grace, centred...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2016

The 2013 Vieux Château Certan has plentiful fruit on the nose considering the vintage: raspberry coulis, crushed strawberry and a touch of blackcurrant pastilles. The palate is medium-bodied and while it might not rank...

Wine Spectator, March 2016

Very enticing, featuring crushed boysenberry and raspberry fruit, accented by fruitcake, black tea and bramble notes. Shows excellent length and energy for the vintage, with enough stuffing for the cellar. This has...

This is soft and silky with chocolate, orange peel and dust. Medium body, round and light tannins. Fresh finish. Drink now.

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2016

The wine is light in color, with a nose that is already showing its secondary truffle, forest floor, fresh herbs and red fruit character. Medium bodied, soft, polished and reserved, the wine ends with sweet, ripe, light...

Vinous, August 2023

The 2013 Vieux-Château-Certan has one of the most attractive aromatics amongst the Pomerol intake, red fruit and briary, light floral scents, air and demonstrating more delineation than its peers. The palate is...

Vieux Chateau Certan, sometimes referred to among Bordeaux enthusiasts as “VCC”, is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates of the Pomerol appellation. The estate is located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau, just a few rows of vines away from the bell tower of Pomerol’s famous church. The vines are planted on the famed Gunz terrace with soils made up of large, round pebbles together with different clays over an iron-rich subsoil.

The vineyard covers 14 hectares (35 acres) in a single block, and includes 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Sauvignon performs exceptionally well in this terroir and reaches perfect ripeness levels.

With its brilliant velvety color, outstandingly rich aromas, and the depth and subtlety of its flavors, Vieux Chateau Certan is regularly ranked by the world’s press and international tasting panels among the very top wines. It has naturally good concentration and repays cellaring for several years before drinking.
