Wine Enthusiast, March 2015

(WE93-95 points) This is a serious wine, with dense tannins and concentrated structure. It has strong wood and smoky bacon notes that need to harmonize with the dark plum flavor and ample acidity.

Complex aromas of sweet tobacco, chocolate, cedar and plums. Undertones of blackcurrants and dark chocolate. Dense and tight with a beautifully and tightly knit palate, yet this shows so much intensity and length. Love...

You are immediately captured by the aromatics of this wine, such gorgeous complexity on display, layers of fern, heather, sage, white pepper, gun smoke. Taut tannins still at 6 years old, with nuanced, balanced, juicy and...

Decanter, January 2023

Freshness is the key here, with black cherry and berry fruit, as well as violets on the nose. Filigree tannin and crisp acidity keep the palate lively and refreshing. Still quite a lot of oak on the finish, this would...

The 2014 Château d’Issan is a step back from the 2015 yet is still a beautiful and elegant wine from this estate. Its ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by a gorgeous set of aromatics including currants, cedar, lead...

The Wine Independent, March 2024

Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, the 2014 d'Issan struts out with ready-to-go notes of redcurrant jelly, bay leaves, and graphite plus wafts of tobacco leaf and charcoal with a hint of forest floor. The medium-bodied...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2017

91+ The 2014 D'Issan has a crisp, pure bouquet, quite tight and reticent like the 2014 Marquis d'Alesme Becker, eventually offering blackberry, soy and cedar scents, almost Saint Julien in style. The palate is...

Chateau d’Issan is located in the center of the Margaux appellation and rated as a third growth in the official Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Mild weather, moderated by proximity to the sea and the Gironde Estuary, provides ideal conditions for vine growth. The vines are, on average, 35 years old. The estate has 44 hectares of vines in Margaux, 5 in Haut-Medoc and 10 in Bordeaux Superieur.

Chateau d’Issan has a long history dating back to the 12th century when it was a fiefdom with the name of La Mothe-Cantenac. It already had an established reputation long before the 1855 classification, reportedly served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henri Plantagenet, future King of England, on 18th May 1152.

The estate has been handed down from generation to generation through inheritance and marriage until from 1575 onwards, it has been owned by five generations of the Essenault family who contracted their name and renamed the property “Issan”.

Chateau d’Issan expresses the exquisite bouquet so characteristic of Margaux, and stands out for its suppleness, subtlety, elegance and long aging potential.

The wine is made from the old vines in the Chateau d’Issan enclosure in the middle of the Margaux appellation. The soil is mainly comprised of surface gravel on a clay subsoil, contributing to optimal ripeness and freshness in the estate’s two grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The wine is aged in barrels for 16 to 18 months, half of which are new.

The 2014 d'Issan is a Bordeaux Blend that hails from the prestigious Margaux region of Bordeaux, France. This red wine is a true representation of the elegance and complexity found in the wines of this renowned appellation. With a deep red color and a cork closure, this wine exudes a sense of tradition and craftsmanship.

Upon pouring, the aromas of the 2014 d'Issan immediately captivate the senses. Complex aromatics of sweet tobacco, chocolate, cedar, and plums intertwine with undertones of blackcurrants and dark chocolate. These enticing scents create an alluring bouquet that invites you to delve deeper into the wine.

On the palate, the 2014 d'Issan reveals a beautifully and tightly knit structure. The dense tannins and concentrated structure give this wine a serious character. The dark plum flavor harmonizes with the strong wood and smoky bacon notes, creating a symphony of flavors. Ample acidity adds vibrancy and balance to the wine, further enhancing its overall appeal.

The 2014 d'Issan has received high praise from esteemed wine critics. Wine Enthusiast awarded it an impressive score of 95 points, describing it as a wine with dense tannins and a concentrated structure. James Suckling also lauded this wine, giving it a score of 94 points and praising its intensity and length. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it 91+ points, commending its classic style and masculine finish.

This wine is already approachable, but it has the potential to age gracefully for years to come. Its freshness and lively acidity make it a great candidate for further cellaring. If enjoyed now, it is recommended to decant the wine to fully appreciate its complexity.

In conclusion, the 2014 d'Issan is a wine that embodies the essence of Margaux. With its complex aromas, concentrated structure, and impressive accolades, it is a true testament to the quality and craftsmanship of this esteemed Bordeaux estate. Whether enjoyed now or in the years to come, this wine promises an unforgettable drinking experience.
