Another wine which showed wonderfully at en primeur and is now delivering on its promise. It's going to be a brilliant wine to drink in a few years time, and it will hold its own for a good few decades to come. Finessed tannins are joined by cassis with plenty of depth, and menthol and eucalyptus notes on the finish. It's silky and smooth, with good persistency - a great wine that's hard to fault if you're looking for a good Médoc for drinking. 50% new oak. Harvested through until 14 October. The property changed hands in 2017, passing from the Gardinier family to Belgian investor Philippe Van de Vyvere.

The initial wood flavors in this wine rapidly give way to rich fruit. Spice and black-plum flavors are built by a firmly tannic superstructure. The aftertaste brings out the acidity. This wine should develop well over the long term. Drink from 2023. ROGER VOSS

Beautiful texture and grip right from the first moment, showcasing why this is one of the best estates in the appellation. It's a thoroughly St Estephe mix of power, freshness and fruit, with bilberry, cassis and blueberry dominant, clearly a vintage that was ripe but not over-ripe, showcasing eucalyptus and mint edges. Has architecture and chracter, and will age for a good few decades from here. Harvest September 29 to October 14.

The 2014 Phelan-Segur has quite a punchy nose with blackberry, iris and iodine scents that shoot from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant chewiness on the entry. This segues into a well balanced middle with well-judged acidity, crisp black fruit infused with graphite and a touch of sea salt towards the finish. It might not quite have the finesse of the top Saint Estèphe's, but there is clearly decent length and energy here. Tasted twice with consistent notes. - Neal Martin
