The name Burgundy (Bourgogne in French) comes from the Burundians, an ancient Germanic people originating in Bornholm who settled in the area during the early Middle Ages.
Burgundy’s best red and white wines set the gold standard for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. At the top of their game, Burgundy wines are acknowledged as some of the most aromatically complex, seductive and silky on the globe. This thanks in part to their indescribable melding of fruits, flowers, minerals, and earth, as well as their facility in projecting an authoritative flavor sans excess weight.
Unfortunately, for many, the best Burgundies are only produced in limited numbers. Burgundy wines can spell trouble for the non-connoisseur—there are still many examples of less than stellar, overpriced bottles for sale. This fact is due to the nature of the region’s vineyard ownership. An individual, small premier cru vineyard may be subdivided amongst a dozen or more owners. These owners may produce everything from plonk to exceptional wines—all at the same price—depending on the skills of the producer.
The Côte d'Or, or "golden slope," is the in heart of Burgundy and is home to the region’s most famous, and pricey, wines. This 30-mile-long ribbon of vineyards is where all the Grand Cru vineyards (except for Chablis Grand Cru) are found. The Côte d'Or lies just south of Dijon extending to Chagny. The greater Burgundy region also envelopes Chablis to the northern extreme, while the Côte Chalonnaise and Maconnais regions are located to the south of the Côte d'Or. Beaujolais, at the extreme southern end of the Burgundy region, almost touches the outreaches of Lyon.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 93 points: (91-93) The 2015 Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots was one of the standouts from Dubreuil-Fontaine this year. It has an impressive, well-defined, very focused bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, damp earth and woodlands scents...
Wine Spectator, 95 points: The cherry and raspberry flavors take on a slight confectionary quality in this lean, taut red. Though in lock-down today, there is concentrated fruit at the core and a long, vibrant finish. Spicy aftertaste. Best from...
Vinous, 93 points: The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts Doix 1er Cru has a more compact, high-toned bouquet than Drouhin’s Chambolle premier cru tasted alongside, with darker fruit (blueberry and bilberry) complementing the red fruit. The...
Burghound, 92 points: (89-92) An exuberantly fresh nose offers notes of red cherry and currant that are liberally laced with earth, spice and oak hints. There is once again good vibrancy to the generously proportioned and fleshy medium-bodied...
Burghound, 91 points: (89-91) A completely different aromatic profile is present here with much more sauvage character to the earthy red and dark currant scents. The sleek, cool and beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors possess both...
Vinous, 90 points: Bright, full red. Musky, pure aromas of raspberry, strawberry and crushed rock. Wonderfully sweet, even a bit candied, with its sappy red fruit and mineral flavors supported by a firm spine of acidity. This serious...
jamessuckling.com, 95 points: The aromas of strawberries and orange peel are so enticing here. Cherry, too. Full-bodied, tannic and powerful with chewy tannins that shows an oyster-shell and crush-stone character. Organically farmed. Need three or...
Burghound, 93 points: (91-93) A discreet touch of wood sets off the more elegant aromas of red and dark currant, anise, violet and soft earth nuances. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the caressing yet quite serious and intense...
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 93 points: (91-93) The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru la Perrière comes from purchased grapes, although Laurent Lignier controls the vineyard that is in its first year of conversion to biodynamie. It has a perfumed and floral...
Vinous, 91 points: (this 1.5-hectare holding features a range of vine ages, the youngest parcel planted in 1982): Dark ruby-red. Aromas of black cherry and licorice are lifted by an element of crushed stone. Dense, rich and fresh, showing a...
Burghound, 93 points: (90-93) Here too there is enough wood and menthol influence to mention framing the very ripe plum and earth aromas that reveal a wisp of prune. There is excellent size, weight and punch to the full-bodied and muscular...
Burghound, 95 points: (92-95) Once again subtle but not unnoticeable wood surrounds the slightly riper and liqueur-like aromas of black cherry, sandalwood, Asian spice elements and a lovely array of floral scents. There is both excellent...

I've enjoyed every buying experience with JJ Buckley. Having someone email me great offers, as well as going to the site directly to check out wine, allows me to buy what I want at great prices. It's been a great wine buying experience so far.
