About the Burgundy wine region
The name Burgundy (Bourgogne in French) comes from the Burundians, an ancient Germanic people originating in Bornholm who settled in the area during the early Middle Ages.
Burgundy’s best red and white wines set the gold standard for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. At the top of their game, Burgundy wines are acknowledged as some of the most aromatically complex, seductive and silky on the globe. This thanks in part to their indescribable melding of fruits, flowers, minerals, and earth, as well as their facility in projecting an authoritative flavor sans excess weight.
Unfortunately, for many, the best Burgundies are only produced in limited numbers. Burgundy wines can spell trouble for the non-connoisseur—there are still many examples of less than stellar, overpriced bottles for sale. This fact is due to the nature of the region’s vineyard ownership. An individual, small premier cru vineyard may be subdivided amongst a dozen or more owners. These owners may produce everything from plonk to exceptional wines—all at the same price—depending on the skills of the producer.
The Côte d'Or, or "golden slope," is the in heart of Burgundy and is home to the region’s most famous, and pricey, wines. This 30-mile-long ribbon of vineyards is where all the Grand Cru vineyards (except for Chablis Grand Cru) are found. The Côte d'Or lies just south of Dijon extending to Chagny. The greater Burgundy region also envelopes Chablis to the northern extreme, while the Côte Chalonnaise and Maconnais regions are located to the south of the Côte d'Or. Beaujolais, at the extreme southern end of the Burgundy region, almost touches the outreaches of Lyon.
(92-94 points) There are two plots, purchased in 2009, one in the upper part of the vineyard and one below, next to de Montille. Interestingly this is clearly finer in style than the Grands Epenots, fresher, with better...
A very serious wine for Mercurey, although the nose of forest berries with a rooty touch is only just beginning to open up. Tightly focused, medium-bodied palate with excellent tannin structure and a very long, fresh...
The 2019 Clos de Tart Grand Cru has turned out brilliantly. Mingling notes of wild berries and cherries with hints of peonies, rose petal, orange rind, exotic spices and musk, it's full-bodied, layered and...
A smoky and restrained nose grudgingly reveals its notes of dark currant, red cherry, earth, game and a hint of underbrush. The supple yet intense medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality on the sleekly muscular...
(94-96 points) Much more massive of course than the Echezeaux which preceded it. There are no stems retained, though Jérôme Flous thinks he might like to try some in Clos Vougeot. A reductive wood note is slightly...
(92-95 points) Rich full purple. The bouquet has a freshness to it, which aids precision. Seamless gorgeous ripe fruit right across the palate, and with excellent length. Shows where it comes from (upper part), but a...
(93-95 points) The 2019 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru comes from a 0.15-hectare plot. It has a charming bouquet with beautifully defined red cherries and wild strawberry fruit intermixed with bergamot and light tea leaf...
(93-95 points) From Les Santenots-du-Milieu, dating back to 1976 plus some young vines. Bright crimson, deep yet fresh dark raspberry on the nose, very sensual, this is sumptuous on the palate and thrilling too...
A more deeply pitched nose is composed by notes of the sauvage, plum, dark raspberry, earth and a hint of wood. There is excellent volume to the tautly muscular but rich and generously proportioned medium-bodied flavors...
(92-94 points) The 2019 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a tough time following from the more expressive Les Caillerets. This is very tight and contained, missing the same joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with...
Perhaps this warm and generous wine, with a pronounced rooty character, is not the most charming Volnay out there, but it has very good depth and excellent harmony, thanks to the fine tannins. The generous finish pulls...
A serious wine for this appellation with excellent red and black fruit that is beautifully underlined by the full, healthy tannins on the medium-to full-bodied palate. Very satisfying, long finish with quite some...
Admirably discreet wood is present on the spicier and earthier aromas of red and dark currant along with a pretty hint of violet. Here too the medium-bodied flavors possess unusually good refinement for Morgeot while...
(91-93 points) A more elegant and even fresher nose is comprised by a pretty blend of both red and dark pinot fruit, sandalwood, violet and a subtle touch of wood. There is better volume and richness to the attractively...
A more elegant and attractively perfumed nose exhibits notes of spicy red currant, floral and cool earth. The refined, detailed and punchy middle weight flavors possess a beguiling mid-palate texture while offering...
