The name Burgundy (Bourgogne in French) comes from the Burundians, an ancient Germanic people originating in Bornholm who settled in the area during the early Middle Ages.
Burgundy’s best red and white wines set the gold standard for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. At the top of their game, Burgundy wines are acknowledged as some of the most aromatically complex, seductive and silky on the globe. This thanks in part to their indescribable melding of fruits, flowers, minerals, and earth, as well as their facility in projecting an authoritative flavor sans excess weight.
Unfortunately, for many, the best Burgundies are only produced in limited numbers. Burgundy wines can spell trouble for the non-connoisseur—there are still many examples of less than stellar, overpriced bottles for sale. This fact is due to the nature of the region’s vineyard ownership. An individual, small premier cru vineyard may be subdivided amongst a dozen or more owners. These owners may produce everything from plonk to exceptional wines—all at the same price—depending on the skills of the producer.
The Côte d'Or, or "golden slope," is the in heart of Burgundy and is home to the region’s most famous, and pricey, wines. This 30-mile-long ribbon of vineyards is where all the Grand Cru vineyards (except for Chablis Grand Cru) are found. The Côte d'Or lies just south of Dijon extending to Chagny. The greater Burgundy region also envelopes Chablis to the northern extreme, while the Côte Chalonnaise and Maconnais regions are located to the south of the Côte d'Or. Beaujolais, at the extreme southern end of the Burgundy region, almost touches the outreaches of Lyon.
Vinous, 93 points: The 2015 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru sports very slight reduction on the nose, but the terroir comes through: fine definition, scents of crushed stone and a little walnut, a subtle marine influence in the background...
View From The Cellar, 95 points: The 2015 Mazis from Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy is terrific on both the nose and palate. The bouquet offers up a nascently complex blend of black plums, black cherries, dark chocolate, a beautiful base of Mazis minerality...
View From The Cellar, 91 points: 91+ As readers will recall, the domaine’s Clos Prieur is a blend of the two sections of this vineyard, with thirty percent of the cuvée made from the premier cru sector of Clos Prieur Haut and the balance old vines in the...
Vinous, 91 points: (this 1.5-hectare holding features a range of vine ages, the youngest parcel planted in 1982): Dark ruby-red. Aromas of black cherry and licorice are lifted by an element of crushed stone. Dense, rich and fresh, showing a...
Vinous, 92 points: (90-92) Good dark red. Grapey dark berries, black cherry, licorice, Indian spices and violet on the nose. Then fleshy but a bit brooding--even youthfully stunted--today, with its dark fruit flavors showing good creamy...
Vinous, 89 points: The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Faconnières 1er Cru has a slightly reduced bouquet that feels smudged and lacks the grace and harmony of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and rather dry in the...
Vinous, 90 points: 90+ Healthy dark red. Aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, licorice, rock and game are slightly wild in an enticing way. At once rich and juicy in the mouth, with firm acidity giving the black fruit flavors a...
Vinous, 92 points: 92+ Moderately saturated medium red. Sexy, lightly medicinal aromas of cherry, redcurrant and milk chocolate, with a touch of peppery, spicy lift. (Unlike the foregoing wines, which are from totally destemmed fruit, this...
Burghound, 91 points: In the same fashion as the several of the prior wines there is a touch of prune present though in this case it is quite subtle and doesn’t fight with the aromas of violet, earth, licorice and dark berries. There is...

...JJ Buckley stocks many producers that do not make it into the [local] market, and some that are barely represented throughout the rest of the country at all. The site is smooth and easy to use, and you'll be shocked at the depth of selection and value relative to other wine sellers.
