2006 Bordeaux Tasting Notes

by Chuck Hayward

by Mike Supple

There are certainly a lot of great wines as well. Everybody we talk to describes this as a very challenging vintage. There were ups and downs in temperatures, and the end of the season brought a lot of rain. If not careful, this late rain caused dilution of berry concentration, as well as mold and rot. A lot of extra work had to be done both in the vineyard and in the winery to combat and overcome this problem: extra pruning of the leaves to allow circulation of air and keep the mold at bay; dropping fruit off the vines to improve concentration in remaining bunches; meticulous hand harvesting to ensure only the best fruits we picked; multiple sorting to remove unwanted fruit, mold and rot; very long harvesting period to allow each plot and each varietal to achieve maximum ripeness before being picked. Not everyone is equally committed to this extra effort inorder to produce higher quality wines, but the Chateaux who did it right were able to make some extremely good wine.

Beyond individual Chateaux, region definitely seemed to play an added role this season. We spent the first three days in the right bank: Pomerol and St-Emilion, and explored much more of the Medoc in the past couple days. While the variation from Chateau to Chateau still exists, we are finding that overall the quality among Pomerol and St-Emilion producers is superior to the other regions in 2006. That being said, Cabernet Sauvignon this year grew more successfully in the Medoc than Merlot. For that reason, many of the Medoc producers are putting a higher percentage of Cabernet than usual into their blends. However, the Medoc Chateaux who had the depth of vineyards planted to Merlot were able to salvage some amazing quality berries. For the same reason that Pomerol and St-Emilion are showing so well, it seems that this year the wines with a higher percentage (of quality) Merlot are more complete wines, while those with too much Cabernet are a little more hollow and austere.

I will be posting many tasting notes and impressions over the next few days, and we will make an effort to get them in to a more easily reviewable manner. As many of you are specifically interested in how the First Growths turned out this year, I will put these notes first. The rest will be in alphabetical order, and I will update the list as I can. I am listing the varietal make up of the wines when I can. Bear in mind that for some of these Chateaux, this may not quite be the final blend, so the numbers are approximate. As we don't have as much time as we'd like to put up all the notes at once, I will begin by posting the more asked about wines, as well as the higher scoring surprises for the vintage. Then I will continue with the rest of our notes, including the many that are unfortunately having a disappointing year.

Without further ado, the first growths:

2006 Mouton Rothschild - 96-100 Pauillac
This wine has a bright dark core with a vibrant ruby rim. Violet aromas flow over dark rich cherry and blackberry, backed by hints of black licorice, vanilla, leather, and sweet tobacco. On the palate the wine is soft up front, an quickly swells on th mid-palate, building fruit and tannic power. The intense depth of dark fruit is complemented by roasted coffee bittersweet cocoa, leaving lingering black cherries, vanilla and hints of cedar on the finish. This is a very well structured wine, and a great effort to see coming from Mouton, perhaps the best made '06 First Growth. 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot. -Mike Supple

2006 Latour - 94-96 Pauillac
A fairly dark purple/opaque core with hints of violet in the pink rim. Like the rest of the wines from Chateau Latour in 2006, this is a very floral wine, with aromas of violets and white flowers over rich red fruits and hints of milk chocolate. On the palate it is firm, powerful and well structured. The fruit is lush up front, but gets slightly dominated on the mid-palate by the tannic strength. A slatey minerality underlies the fruit in to the finish, leaving chewy lingering dark fruits. 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. -Mike Supple

2006 Margaux - 91-94 Margaux
A dark, intense core is surrounded by a bright fuchsia rim. Light aromas of jasmine and lilac up front are underscored by dark berry fruits, sweet blackberry and light earthy notes. Young oak is apparent on the front of the palate. The tannins are strong, but this is not quite as voluptuous and bold a wine as was their impressive 2005. The finish is long with spicy cinnamon, cedar and hints of licorice. Nevertheless, this effort leaves a bit to be desired. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot. -Mike Supple

2006 Lafite Rothschild - 90-93 Pauillac
Dark bright core surrounded by a pink rim edged with violet hints. Smokey earth lead the aromas above lighter red and black fruits: cherry, cassis, blackberry. There is a light note of fresh anise on the nose as well. The wine enters the palate with sweet fruit flavors, and the fruit builds to a much greater intensity than the aromas suggested at first. The tannins build well, but remain somewhat subdued. Some spicy black licorice notes on the finish. 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. -Mike Supple

2006 Haut-Brion - 90-93 Pessac-Leognan
Dark purple in the glass, with a violet rim. On the nose there fruit aromas are very dark: black cherry, blackberry and cassis accented by light vanilla and cinnamon. However, there is a green herb aroma that denotes a lack of complete ripeness in the fruit. New oak comes through on the front of the palate followed by sweet berry fruit. Not quite as full and lush on the mid-palate, and the tannic structure stays more powerful than the fruit through the finish. Does have a nice spicy quality not present in many of the 2006 wines. Tasted twice with consistent notes. 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 57% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. -Mike Supple
