Few wines can seduce the senses quite like fully mature sweet Bordeaux. Per Jancis Robinson, Sauternes “combines power, voluptuousness, and elegance, and good bottles can evolve and improve for up to 50 years.” Perhaps even more remarkable than the liquid gold itself is its pricing: “Given the risks and costs involved in its production, it remains underpriced in relation to the enormous pleasure it brings”.

Within Sauternes lies the commune of Barsac, whose châteaux are entitled to label their wines under either label. If one producer typifies the finesse and elegance of Barsac, it’s surely Château Climens, and we've a super-limited amount of their "elegant" 2000 vintage for an absolute steal - the best price of any vintage on the market!

Robert Parker calls Climens “consistently one of the most profound wines” of the entire Sauternes region, and with good reason. It’s the star of its appellation, and one of just eleven Sauternes properties ranked as first growths in the 1855 classification. Its situation within Barsac is perfect, and its closest neighbors are the similarly highly-rated Coutet and Doisy-Daëne.

More so than perhaps any of its peers, critics often compare Climens in quality terms with Yquem. Per Chris Kissack, Climens is “the most believable challenger to the supremacy of” that legendary esate, while Neal Martin says that “Climens is for discerning individuals who admire sublime, sweet Bordeaux. In many ways, Yquem without the price-tag.” The two estates have plenty in common, not least that both vineyards are planted solely to Semillon. Exactly how close the two properties are in quality stakes may be a matter of subjective or critical opinion, though they diverge widely on price.

A fully mature Sauternes by the half bottle, the 2000 Climens is the highest rated sweet Bordeaux of the vintage per Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. It’s very rare to find half bottles of Climens under $30, much less bottles with some age that are in stock and have perfect provenance. We definitely recommend Climens as a go-to Sauternes regardless of vintage and the critics are in agreement, with Neal Martin suggesting that he has “no hesitation including Climens amongst the small cluster of wines that are consistent come rain or shine, alongside La Mission Haut-Brion, Leoville Las-Cases and yes, Yquem.” Stock up on this gem today!
