2001 Domaine Jean Raphet et Fils Gevrey Chambertin
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $54.94 (reg. $69.94)
Fans of classic, mature red Burgundy take note! Here's a perfectly aged village level Gevrey Chambertin that's still providing a ton of pleasure for a comparable price to current releases.
The Raphet family owns 12 hectares of Pinot spread out over the upper echelon of Burgundy Grand and Premier Crus: Clos de Beze, Charmes Chambertin, Clos de la Roche, Clos Vougeot, Lavaux Saint Jacques and Les Combottes Premier Crus; and today's estate-owned vineyards in Gevrey.
Jean Raphet, now passed (unfortunately), made Burgundy lover's Burgundy, He retired in 2002, so this is his last vintage at the helm before passing things off to his son Gerard - a slice of vinous history, if you will! He is renowned for making absolutely classic, elegant red Burgundy, such as today's charming effort.
We opened a bottle recently and it was an absolute delight, firing along with tension that belies its age. If you're into aged Burgs or looking to dive in and see what they're all about, this is a great example that won't break the bank. Cheers!
