With “one of the greatest vineyards in Bordeaux” according to Robert Parker, Calon Segur has always been a winner regardless of vintage, but in a top year like 2005 the result is a “traditionally made, backstrapping, uncompromising Bordeaux that will last 30-40 or more years.” At over 15 years old, the 2005 Calon Segur is only just at the beginning of its drinking window, and it surely has decades to go, which makes this the perfect choice for Bordeaux collectors to grab a few to stash in the cellar, and at least one to enjoy today.

Since the late 1990s Calon Segur has re-emerged as an increasingly consistent producer thanks to the late great Madame Gasqueton, and in exceptional vintages like 2000 or 2005, it is “undeniably capable of first-growth quality” (Parker). While recently Calon Segur has succeeded in crafting increasingly polished and modern expressions of their vineyard, this 2005 was still very much in their more old-school style, and is sure to be an exceptional wine to follow over the decades. Cheers!

94 points, Jane Anson: "Brilliant, old-school classic St Estèphe. Not as slick as you will find Calon Ségur today, but that is part of its charm. Soft buttery leather notes, very much on the tertiary side at 16 years old, brambled blackberry fruits, tannins a little dusty perhaps, tumeric and saffon spices. Approachable, unfussy and yet the elegance and persisetency reminds you that this is a brilliant estate." (published 2021)

94 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It has a captivating nose: blackberry and boysenberry fruit coming at you at full pelt; dried blood and bacon fat developing as secondary aromas just behind. There is fine delineation here - an underlying mineralité sure to surface with time. The palate is very intense and disarmingly youthful, almost ferrous on the entry with layers of ripe black fruit that segue into an earthy finish (with a curious light tang of Marmite on the aftertaste!). It is a fabulous Calon Ségur...Drink 2020-2050" - Neal Martin (published 2016)

94 points, James Suckling: "Tight and dense still but so integrated and seamless in texture. Aromas of chocolate, hazelnuts, dried spices and currants. Full body, superfine tannins and a texture that is so caressing and beautiful. Drink or hold." (published Nov 2015)
