The only thing that has held up as well as 2005’s reputation as an absolutely world-class vintage in Bordeaux has been the wines themselves, particularly in magnum format. This 2005 Haut Bages Liberal is still a “very young Pauillac” per a recent assessment by Antonio Galloni, and an “impeccably done” effort from the overachieving 5th growth in 2005. In fact, checking in on reviews ever since it was released and it’s clear this vintage of Haut Bages is aging at a glacial pace, with a couple more decades in the tank.
Direct from the Chateau, and with perfect provenance, this one of the most collectible Bordeaux vintages in memory, and a perfect opportunity to stock up in magnum format.
The Villars family have been stewards of this 5th growth property since the 1980s, and under their watch the property has earned a reputation of “punching above its class” (Wine Enthusiast). With plots spread out across the appellation, including near Chateau Latour, Haut Bages Liberal has always been a quite classic, well balanced Pauillac. 2005 did have a reputation for being a somewhat opulent, even at times backward vintage, but Haut Bages Liberal’s more mid-weight, classical style showed particularly well, with “sweet dried cherry, mint, spice, licorice and dried flowers” (Vinous). This is a great chance to get some more 2005 Pauillac in your collection!
93 points, Wine Spectator: "Very aromatic, showing blackberry and currant aromas, with some licorice. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a rich, decadent, fruity finish. Caresses the palate. Stylish and opulent." (published 2008)
91 points, Vinous: "The 2005 Haut-Bages Libéral is a very young Pauillac that is just beginning to show the first signals of aromatic opening. Sweet dried cherry, mint, spice, licorice and dried flowers all grace this mid-weight Pauillac. Haut-Bages Libéral is not quite as opulent as most other Pauillacs in 2005, and it could have benefitted from a bit more depth, but it is impeccably done and very rewarding today. Drinking window 2022-2040" - Antonio Galloni (published 2021)
