2005 Marquis de Calon

On Sale $39.94 (reg. $49.94)
Does 2005 Bordeaux need any introduction? In 2015, Jancis Robinson called it “surely Bordeaux’s best vintage of the century so far," and Robert Parker declared it to be one of “the three greatest Bordeaux vintages” of his career. Bordeaux 2005 is the stuff of legend and as such, prices for the top grand vins will remain high. The shrewd buyer should then look to the second wines of top estates, like Le Marquis de Calon Segur.
The second wine of Calon Segur, the estate bears the distinction of being the northernmost Grand Cru Classé chateau of the Médoc, boasting what Parker has called “one of the greatest vineyards in Bordeaux, if not the world.”
This bottling is named for the estates one-time owner, the Marquis de Segur. It is thanks to the Marquis that Calon Segur’s label bears its distinctive heart emblem: The Marquis’s portfolio also included estates such as Lafite Rothschild, Latour and Mouton Rothschild, though legend has it that he declared “my heart belongs to Calon.” Evidently, the property’s excellent reputation is nothing new!
The appeal of a Bordeaux second wine is the promise of a highly accessible alternative to the Grand Vin for a fraction of the price. We opened a bottle recently and the '05 Marquis de Calon displays attributes of the flavor profile that the property is know for while offering immediate pleasure. Of course, there’s enough structure there to cellar this for another five or more years, but at this price, why wait?
Second wine or not, what you’re getting here is a solid bottle of Bordeaux with a touch of age from a prime terroir and a superb winemaking team. We have a limited quantity in stock, so grab some while you can. Cheers!
