2006 Chapoutier & Laughton Shiraz 'la Pleiade'
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $64.94 (reg. $84.94)
Here's a classic, aged, low production Shiraz from renowned winemakers Michel Chapoutier and Ron Laughton! The very best of two hemispheres combine in this complex, layered and elegant release. Fans of Clarendon Hills 'Astralis' or great Hermitage will want to snap this one up. But as with all the good stuff, quantities are very limited.
This highly acclaimed effort is a real power marriage between two greats—Jasper Hill's Ron Laughton and master of the Rhone, Michel Chapoutier. One of two joint projects, 'le Pleiade' (or M45 as it's billed in the US) is sourced from a tiny Heathcote vineyard planted with superior Australian shiraz clones and syrah cuttings imported from Chapoutier's Hermitage vineyard. The resulting 2006 release is a beautifully structured, knockout! With heady aromas of rich, earthy black fruit, smoky spices, and a multi-layered, full-bodied palate, it finishes long and elegant with fine tannins and bright acidity that will provide for extended aging for 20 or more years.
The label depicts the Pleiades, aka Cluster M45, a small, bright constellation of Taurus that can be viewed from both partners’ home vineyards in Tain l’Hermitage and Heathcote. Although this wine can be found under two different names, it's the same juice in the bottle and we're the only place in the US to currently find the 2006!
This is a world-class wine for those that appreciate syrah with finesse and style. Make sure to stash a few away in the cellar, as this "brilliant effort" will only get better with time. Cheers!
