The wines of Saint-Julien may be the greatest expression of that balance that makes Bordeaux so very special. Hugh Johnson calls Saint-Julien the “epitome of harmonious, fragrant, savoury red” wine, and the appellation’s best wines straddle the line between Margaux elegance and Pauillac power. To truly appreciate the delicate balance inherent to these wines, you’ll want a mature vintage from a quality producer.

We've got just the ticket! The 2006 Gruaud Larose is over a decade old and comes directly from one of Saint-Julien’s most illustrious second growths. Even better, ours is the lowest price in the US!

Gruaud Larose was immortalized as a Deuxième Cru Classé in 1855 alongside Ducru-Beaucaillou and the Léoville estates – Las Cases, Barton and Poyferré. Johnson calls it “one of the biggest, best-loved second growths” and its motto translates to “the wine of kings, the king of wines”. When Jacques Merlaut acquired the estate in 1997, he set out to turn its fortunes around. Robert Parker said at the time that “this property seems set to recapture its glory days of the sixties and eighties."

Following the legendary 2005 vintage was never going to be easy, but there's plenty here to like. Stephen Tanzer says that “drinkers of a more classic bent may actually prefer numerous 2006s to the riper and often high-alcohol 2005s.” What’s more, 2006’s modest reputation means value for the consumer. Aged Gruaud Larose from respectable vintages can often command in excess of $100 a bottle, but we’ve got the 2006 for less than $70.

Twelve years on from the vintage date, the 2006 Gruaud Larose is drinking wonderfully. Few wines offer the delicate balance and tension of aged Bordeaux, and few producers encapsulate it better than this stalwart Saint-Julien estate. This is ready to drink right now, though of course, this is blue-chip classified growth Médoc we’re talking about, so you can cellar it with confidence for another 15 years, easily. So, grab some for now, and later! Cheers!
