2006 was a watershed year for Taittinger. With the legendary Champagne house back in family hands, they were able to make a splash with one of the finest tête de cuvées of the vintage. Taittinger has always had a magical touch with Chardonnay and their 2006 Blanc de Blanc ‘Comtes de Champagne’ is one of the “all-time great vintages” according to Antonio Galloni. Galloni is unquestionably one of the leading authorities on Champagne, so when he called this vintage of 'Comtes' "magical" and "magnificent", it got our attention fast!
Taittinger's 'Comtes de Champagne' is a true tête de cuvée and is peer to Dom Perignon, Salon, and Cristal. Taittinger has always been a bit more decorous in their branding however and has kept production levels, price, and marketing more restrained than those other examples, making ‘Comte’ one of the great insider buys in Champagne. As Galloni notes, "it remains the single best value (in relative terms) in tête de cuvée Champagne."
Sourced from the Côte des Blancs Grand Cru vineyards, the Comtes de Champagne was first produced in the 1952 vintage and is only made in the absolute best vintages. Despite the stunning track record of success, 2006 looks likely to be a best yet vintage for the ‘Comtes.’
Great Champagne never goes out of style, and when you look at pricing for the other top Champagnes, this is clearly a wine to go big on. Take Galloni’s advice and grab a case today to follow over the next 20 years!
