2008 Barone Ricasoli Chianti Classico Castello di Brolio
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $39.94 (reg. $59.94)
Baron Bettino Ricasoli “literally wrote the book on how to make Chianti Classico” (JS). Today, however, Ricasoli’s current Baron, Francesco (the 32nd generation of Ricasoli wine producers), chooses not to let history speak for itself and merely rest on his laurels. Rather, Francesco is leaving “more of a mark on Italy's famous wine region through producing excellent quality reds in the Chianti Classico region,” and “is one of the smartest and most dedicated vintners I know in Tuscany” (JS).
This is the absolute oldest winery in Tuscany and all of Italy. “Arguably, no other estate in the region carries more historical weight,” states Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate —the Ricasoli estate has been in production since the middle of the 12th century and after all the years, critics still rave over the wines of this historic estate.
“Made only in exceptional years, their flagship Chianti Classico 'Castello di Brolio' represents the pinnacle of Ricasoli's inherited knowledge and dedication to excellence,” per Antonio Galloni. And with this particular vintage, you’re getting “a cellarworthy 2008, with lush and delicious black cherry flavors...Balanced and sophisticated, this should age with grace” (W&S).
With 10 years of age, the tannins have fully integrated, but the wine retains a freshness that will provide a handful more years of peak drinking. Pop the cork and enjoy this modern classic, truly one of the best of the region, and for less than $40! Cheers!
