2008 Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino 'Madonna delle Grazie'
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $69.94 (reg. $85.94)
"There is no doubt that knowledgeable Brunello fans consider Il Marroneto to be one of the top dozen or so estates in Montalcino today... Il Marroneto has been the source of some of the purest, most perfumed and most archetypal renditions of sangiovese made anywhere." - Antonio Galloni
Il Marroneto is really making a major name for themselves, especially with their recent WA100 point rating for the 2010 'Madonna delle Grazie'. That spectacular effort will set you back $300+ if you can track it down, but for a fraction of the price we have the "terrific" 2008 Madonna delle Grazie that's been perfectly aged and is a must for fans of highly regarded and classic Brunello!
"The estate's top selection", Il Marroneto's 'Madonna delle Grazie' will charm you with exquisite aromas of strawberry and cherry mixed with floral overtones. The palate shows off bold, layered fruit and spice flavors on a full-bodied, powerful and structured frame while still retaining elegance. The tannins are persistent yet polished and will continue to soften over time. Brunello generally requires a bit of age to show it's true colors, but with some bottle age already, this is firing on all cylinders and will continue to do so for at least another decade.
As "one of the more dynamic properties in Montalcino", Il Marroneto really delivered the goods in 2008, a fresh and balanced vintage. Made from 30-40 year old vines that "are in their prime production years right now" according to the Wine Advocate, well under 1,000 cases are made and we were fortunate to lock in a few cases at a phenomenal deal.
A decade past the vintage date and this gem is is just hitting its prime. No need to delay pleasure with this one (unlike current releases) and this flagship wine is one of the top efforts of the vintage. Brunello fans, what are you waiting for? Get some now! Cheers!
