2008 San Polino 'Helichrysum' Brunello di Montalcino
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $49.94 (reg. $79.94)
In a short period of time, San Polino has rocketed up the ranks in Brunello, culminating with a perfect 100-point score from noted Italian wine critic James Suckling for their stunning 2010 'Helichrysum'. While that will set you back a pretty penny (if you're lucky enough to find some), we've got their "wonderfully suave and seamless" 2008 'Helichrysum' at the best price of any vintage on the market by a long shot - you won't find a bottling of this for less than $70 elsewhere!
With roots dating back to 1581, it wasn't until current ownership took over the dormant property in the 90's followed up by their first release in 2001 that estate became place of serious intrigue.San Polino’s biodynamically farmed vines are on a superb, south facing hill near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, rising over 400 meters above sea level. With barely six acres under vines on their entire estate (which includes centuries old olive trees), this is as hands on an operation as you can find.
The 2008s are recognized for their aromatic and energetic profiles, and nearly a decade after the vintage this is in terrific form, though there's plenty in reserve. Beautiful wines like this San Polino Brunello ‘Helichrysum,’ offer all the elegance and perfume of the vintage in a decidedly modern, polished frame. We took all we could get at this phenomenal price, but quantities are very limited so Brunello fans will want to act fast. Cheers!
