2008 Vincent Girardin Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
When it comes to enjoying great, properly aged Burgundy, time and money always seem to be in short supply. That is why we are so pleased that our buyer secured a perfectly aged Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru from a standout producer, Vincent Girardin! The 2008 from Vincent Girardin shows classic notes of violets and raspberries, along with sturdier qualities of bitter cacao and licorice. It’s electric acidity “leaves the palate vibrating” (Vinous) and is responsible for its delightful evolution over the past decade. With the delicate tannin integrating, this 2008 Charmes-Chambertin is entering its early drinking window but is built for the long haul.
At the close of harvest in 2008 no one expected this up and down vintage to turn out the way it did. Today the critical consensus has flipped, and Tanzer describes the '08s as “exciting for purists who enjoy classically structured wines” while Galloni writes that the vintage “turned out far better than anyone, growers included, could have ever hoped.”
Girardin built his domaine and negociant from small beginnings, just a family plot of a few hectares. Today his delightfully forward and elegant wines are reasonably priced and sell out quickly, so don’t delay! Whether you are looking for classic grand cru Burgundy that is ready to drink, or just want to backfill on a traditionally styled vintage, you will definitely want to secure some of this allocation. Cheers!
