"Over the last few years, I have been increasingly impressed with Mastrojanni...Quality is on the rise here, big time." - Antonio Galloni
It's often said that Brunello is one of the most age-worthy reds in Italy. Beyond merely improving with age, it often downright requires it, which is a considerable inconvenience to Sangiovese lovers seeking to enjoy a bottle today. Fortunately a superbly well-priced stock of 2009 Mastrojanni Brunello di Montalcino has just arrived, and it's everything we look for in a classic, mature Sangiovese. Like many in Montalcino, Mastrojanni doesn’t bottle its top wine every year, and in 2009 the best fruit that would have been reserved for the ‘Schiena d'Asino’ went entirely into this entry level Brunello! So you can imagine how this 2009 overperforms, with Vinous writing that it's “one of the best entry-level Brunellos in some time from this estate.”
Mastrojanni’s “extraordinary estate” (Wine Advocate) is in the finest area of southern Montalcino in the hills above Castelnuovo dell’Abate. The warmth of the region promotes ripeness, but the elevation helps keep things in check - an invaluable asset in warmer years. A classic warm vintage Brunello, it's overflowing with aromas of dried cherry, herbs, smoke, leather, and rose. On the palate, it shows maturity with fully integrated tannin and plenty of remaining energy to pair with food.
It's extremely rare to see Mastrojanni for under $40, and today’s price of $37.94 is the lowest you'll find of any vintage. This is an absolutely wonderful opportunity to source a mature, unpretentious example of Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy’s greatest wines. Cheers!
