2010 was a resounding success in Tuscany, arguably one of the top vintages in years. As such, demand has been high, but outstanding deals are becoming fewer and far between. Proving that down right delicious wines that offer a ton of value can still be found if you know where to look, we've got a JJB exclusive on this double 94-point, low-production beauty (only 500 cases made) for a screaming deal.
Castelli di Grevepesa, a co-operative founded fifty years ago by a group of winegrowers with the intention of preserving some of the region's finest vineyard sites, has been producing marvelous wine for decades. With prime vineyards throughout Tuscany, their two very best releases are their 'Gran Seleziones' from Lamole and Panzano, two towns in the very heart of Chianti Classico. This 'Lamole' release comes from high-altitude vineyards that impart tremendous freshness and acidity to the wine.
'Gran Selezione' is a new classification for the region, and while consumers may rightly be confused by having more distinctions to consider, know that the bottom line here is a guarantee of quality. Wines must be 100% estate grown, be aged a minimum of 30 months before release, and pass a rigorous tasting panel. There can be no doubt that 'Gran Selezione' is THE benchmark for quality in Chianti Classico!
This is undoubtedly a terrific value in Italian wine, one that comes with a guarantee of quality. For those that love the very best from the heart of Italy, you'll want to stock up on this one by the case. Cheers!
