"This under-the-radar estate in the Monferrato district deserves serious attention...these are some of the most unique and compelling wines readers will find in Piedmont." - Antonio Galloni
If 2010 was the year of all things grand and noble for Italian wine, 2011 was for the just darn tasty. The fear of a difficult vintage in Piedmont lifted when everybody began to realize just how good many wines were so soon after release. The 2011 Accornero Barbera del Monferrato Superiore Bricco Battista is no exception and is as much a mouthful of a name as it is a wine.
Today we have this "thrilling wine" for over 30% off and the best price around by over $10 per bottle.
Coming from “one of Piedmont’s under the radar jewels” that “dazzles from top to bottom” according to Antonio Galloni, Accornero is unusual in Piedmont. Most producers of Barolo and Barbaresco tend to produce wines like Barbera and Dolcetto to make a little extra money while the Nebbiolo ages - not so with Accornero. Their entire portfolio focuses on these other unsung heros of Piedmont, and the added focus on these varietals pays off; rather than being second-tier wines for Accornero, these are the stars of the vineyard.
For a wine like Barbera, that is made for everyday consumption, the effect of the 2011 vintage cannot be understated. While the complexity is there to compete with more noble Piedmont wines, it's priced to scratch that weeknight itch with aplomb. Galloni "can't recommend these wines highly enough. Best of all, most of the wines in the range remain accessibly priced."
This is top shelf Barbera at a price that puts it firmly in the go-to category so load up by the case. Cheers!
