"an effortless, incredibly inviting wine" - 94 points, Antonio Galloni
Ciacci is one of Montalcino’s oldest estates, and over the past few decades they have earned a reputation for sumptuous, blockbuster Brunello that has come to define the Castelnuovo dell'Abate subzone. This 2011 is a knockout Brunello, with classic Sangiovese flavors all wrapped up in a generous and approachable package. With all of the hype surrounding the structured 2010s and ‘12s, it's easy to forget about the 2011s, but you won't want to miss out on this double 94-point effort at well over 30% off and easily the best price around.
Sitting at the top of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, the Ciacci property was bequeathed to the Bianchini family back in 1985 by the Countess Ciacci, and since then they have made classic Castelnuovo style Brunello. Their 2011 outperformed in the warmer vintage because the Bianchini’s skipped both the riserva and special selection, putting all the best fruit in the normale Brunello, and aging it for three years in barrel instead of the required two! The quality is clear and James Suckling called it “one of the wines of the vintage.” Open-knit and rich, the 2011 still shows exceptional typicity and balance.
While the ‘10s and 12’s will need plenty of time to round into form, the 2011s are so darn tasty today that ‘why wait?’ might as well be the unofficial slogan of the vintage. You won't want to wait to lock in some of the '11 Ciacci at an unbeatable price though as this deal won't be around for long, so load up today! Cheers!
