2011 Ergo Sum Shiraz (Chapoutier & Giaconda)
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $29.94 (was: $79.94)
Syrah has found a welcome home in wine-producing areas around the world, but few expressions of this noble grape are as distinct as Australian Shiraz. Today’s 2011 Ergo Sum is a take-no-prisoners Syrah/Shiraz from two of the greatest winemakers of the Rhone and Australia: Chapoutier, the Rhone’s master of Syrah, and Rick Kinzbrunner of Giaconda, “one of Australia’s iconic wineries.” This limited joint project lasted only a handful of vintages, and you won’t find this 2011 anywhere else. Today’s 2011 is an elegant, cool vintage beauty, and it’s available for over 60% off our regular price and under $30!
Michel Chapoutier is well known for his mastery of the most exclusive Rhone valley appellations (Hermitage, St Joseph etc). When Chapoutier set his sights abroad, Australia and Giaconda were a natural match. Giaconda has been described as “one of Victoria’s most brilliant wineries” according to the Wine Advocate, while James Suckling describes Giaconda and Kinzbrunner as the very best of Victoria. Robert Parker was not too shy with praise either, admiring their “hand-crafted, singular wines that are not only gorgeous to smell and taste, but innovative.”
2011 was a year that, for skilled winemakers like these, led to more elegant, restrained expressions than the preceding vintages. This is an absolute must have for fans of both Chapoutier and Australian Shiraz - especially at this price. Enjoy its lush but fresh core of dark fruits, licorice, and mint over the next 8-10 years. Cheers!
