Tuscany’s identity as the source of Italy’s finest Sangiovese has never really been in question, and the options are dizzying at every price point, from Chianti to Brunello. Fortunately, with the help of sommeliers and wine geeks stateside, the underappreciated (and seriously affordable) Morellino di Scansano is proving there is even more to discover in Tuscany. Nobody in Maremma has done more to help promote this unique Sangiovese more than Elisabetta Geppetti. It’s not just the quality of the wines that is exciting, but the sub-$30 price for her Riserva!
A vineyard selection of their top estate Sangiovese with a tiny quantity of Merlot, Le Pupille’s Morellino di Scansano Riserva from the ‘Poggio Valente’ vineyard will compete with many a Brunello, but you can open it guilt free any time the evening calls for great Italian charmer.
Elisabetta Geppetti is for Maremma, the “single face that identifies a region” according to Wine Advocate and Antonio Galloni has praised her for crafting “some of the most delicious wines in the Tuscan Maremma.” Her Poggio Valente vineyard is planted with four different clones of Sangiovese for a balanced, and unique personality featuring “bold intensity, sharp lines and a cheerful personality” (Wine Advocate).
This is a stellar value for riserva-level Sangiovese from the “reigning monarch of Maremma,” (Wine Spectator) and a delightfully fresh interpretation that won’t disappoint. Cheers!
