“I was quite impressed with the wines I tasted from Tenuta Vitalonga.” - Antonio Galloni
For all of the Super Tuscan lovers and California Cabernet fanatics out there, don’t miss out on the Phi! Rated 93 points and under $20, we tasted this recently and found the wine to drink far above its humble price point.
You will want to load up on this one by the case!
This full-bodied, lush wine comes from Umbria, Tuscany’s direct neighbor, and one of the greatest untapped sources of red wine in all of Italy. Combined with its rich winemaking history and similarities of terroir to Tuscany, it offers up a host of reasonably priced fine wines that will appeal to fans of its more famous northern neighbor.
The 'Phi' “shows great personality and authenticity,” according to Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate. “Umbria is a rustic and introspective region of Italy and those same themes are reflected in the darkness and the generous aromas of this wine.”
With a recommended drinking window of 2015-2022, this wine is right in its sweet spot. As demonstrated by the 2011 'Phi', this region of Italy crafts stellar wines "that will appeal to those with more international palates,” reports Vinous, and this is a great stepping-stone to discovering something new while staying within your own wine comfort zone. Ready for your next steak off the grill, this will also withstand a few more years in the cellar, so go big on your new house red! Cheers!
