2011 San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino ‘Le Lucere’
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $39.94 (reg. $59.94)
San Filippo is “home to some of the best boutique Brunello today” (Wine Advocate) and with their top ‘Le Lucere’ bottling they are nailing the elegant, medium-bodied expression of this legendary wine. The 2011 vintage was a year of remarkably fresh, open-knit, and just darn tasty Brunelli, which is a relief since it offers a sure-fire way to keep our hands off the slumbering 10’s and 12’s.
For over 30% off and just under $40 (easily the lowest price around), this is also a Brunello you don’t have to keep waiting for a special occasion, just crack it open with any wintery meal!
The 2011 ‘Le Lucere’ is a “gorgeous wine from San Filippo” (Galloni) showing “generous black cherry, plum, smoke, spice and menthol flesh out on a resonant finish.” Produced from their oldest Brunello vines, practically next door to Biondi-Santi and Cerbaiona, the clay rich soils retain water adding greater balance and vigor in warmer years like ‘11. Crafted in the more elegant, Burgundian style, ‘Le Lucere’ is aged in a mix of large casks and barrique to avoid masking the extraordinary quality of this fruit (this is from the slopes of Montalcino proper not the warmer southern lowlands).
While still demanding a bit of time to breathe, this is an accessible 'Le Lucere' that will drink beautifully today after just six years in bottle, and will continue to evolve for another ten easily. This is a superb choice for when you really crave the class of a great Brunello but don’t want to disturb those 2010’s too early! Cheers!
