2012 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino 'Cerretalto'
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $319 (was: $359)
"Cerretalto is an amazing single-vineyard red wine with all the power and finesse of the top wines of the world, from first growth Bordeaux to grand cru Burgundy." - James Suckling
Casanova di Neri is one of the most prestigious and recognizable names in all of Brunello, with multiple 100-point wines across its portfolio. 'Cerretalto,' the estate's crown jewel, is owner of three of those 100-point scores and hailed by James Suckling as one of the top 10 collectible wines of Italy, so you can imagine our excitement at having secured some of the most recent release.
Hailing from a single vineyard ("cru") in northeastern Montalcino at nearly 1000 feet of elevation, 'Cerretalto' is kept in the winery for six years before release and is made in only the very finest vintages. Even above 'Tenuta Nuova,' this is the signature wine of the estate, and the minuscule production always falls well short of the worldwide demand.
The "2012 vintage is a treat for Brunello lovers," according to Suckling, and Casanova di Neri's 'Cerretalto' is "one of the great Brunellos" of the vintage. But, regardless of year-to-year conditions, "it is important to underline the impressive consistency in quality achieved by Casanova di Neri. Only a handful of Italian wineries can claim this distinction," suggests the Wine Advocate.
Whether you're a die-hard Brunello devotee or a student of the world's great reds, this standout effort will command a cherished place in your cellar alongside your other trophies. Cheers!
