2012 Chateau Pavie-Macquin
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $59.94 (was: $74.94)
If this stunning Premiere Grand Cru St Emilion isn’t already on your radar, then it’s time to take note! Today’s Pavie-Macquin Bordeaux blend is one of the most exciting over-achievers in 2012.
With a ton of critical acclaim (triple 94pt scores!), it’s an absolute must-buy for lovers of Right Bank Bordeaux. Pavie-Macquin has been on a tear lately, and this “masculine, virile style of wine” (Parker) at $59.94 is easily the greatest value in Right Bank grand vin!
An estate with a fairly illustrious history, the modern era had seen Pavie-Macquin performing well below its potential. But the past 20 years has been a terrific comeback story. Nicolas Thienpont and Stéphane Derenoncourt started to turn things around in the 1990s, and today Pavie-Macquin is one of the smartest buys in St Emilion.
The 2012 vintage overall favored the Right Bank, and Pavie-Macquin’s classic blend of 85% Merlot, 14% Cab Franc, and a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon was the ideal assemblage, drawing from the best lots on their vineyard - a clay and limestone rich plateau just above the ‘other’ Chateau Pavie.
The 2012 Pavie Macquin shows “dark cherry, pomegranate, smoke and sweet floral notes” (Vinous) and will age gracefully for the next decade-plus, so add some to your collection today. Cheers!
