The love for great white Burgundy is rooted in a love for that passionate and soulful expression of Chardonnay, full of personality and distinction. This is a style that winemaker Céline Fontaine has cultivated since she started working with her father Richard’s Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard in 2007 and the results throughout their portfolio are clear. Fontaine-Gagnard’s Chassagne-Montrachet is a wonderful value from one of the region’s foremost sources of unique and characterful white Burgundy. Known for her family’s legendary Criots-Batard-Montrachet, and other exceptional 1er and grand cru Chardonnay, Celine’s village Chassagne-Montrachet is a real treat, sourced from the very center of this lauded commune and trading at a modest fraction of their highly regarded grand crus.
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard is part of the greater Gagnard clan, whose several family domaines in the Cote du Beaune are the stuff of legend (and as it happens some of their relative’s holdings have now been consolidated at this domaine). Fontaine-Gagnard in particular is known for their incomparable grand crus as well as an encyclopedic selection of premier crus, which give them a special understanding of, and connection to this appellation.
With fruit from 10 hectares of outstanding terroir, this village Chassagne-Montrachet really shines in the 2012 vintage, which Stephen Tanzer rated highly for “opulent, highly concentrated wines.” The Chassagne Montrachet blanc is, put simply, an overachiever of premier cru quality with a village label, and is a superb choice for the upcoming spate of holiday meals. Cheers!
