2012 Drouhin Laroze Gevrey Chambertin Au Closeau 1er Cru

An ‘undiscovered’ Gevrey cru might seem like a bit of an oxymoron, and even more so an under 60-dollar 1er Cru Gevrey. Then again, the ‘Au Closeau’ 1er Cru Gevrey Chambertin hits both marks. Rarely seen stateside, Au Closeau is adjacent to the Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru and is one of the tiniest crus in the Cote de Nuits. Drouhin-Laroze is the only producer regularly bottling it and Au Closeau’s reputation for elegance is unique in Gevrey. With its atypical exposure and terroir, Au Closeau shows the delicate and finessed side of this area, with the same gravitas of its peers packed into an elegant, aromatic frame. Today we've got Drouin-Laroze’s 2012 Au Closeau for over 30% off our regular price and the best you’ll find of any vintage for this elusive and alluring cru.
Domaine Drouhin-Laroze lies in the heart of Gevrey, and according to the Wine Advocate has “one of the most impressive portfolios of premier and grand crus in the Côte de Nuits.” In addition to their eight grand crus, the Domaine also has the brother sister team Nicolas and Caroline now at the helm, exemplifying the changing of the guard in Burgundy. One thing that isn’t changing at Drouhin-Laroze is the pricing, and the Wine Advocate writes that Caroline and Nicolas Drouhin are continuing their father’s principle that, “they should only charge what they themselves would be happy to pay."
This “pure and fragrant” Au Closeau is irresistible today and should need far less patience than is typical of a Gevrey Chambertin. Cheers!
