2012 Dumol Syrah (Russian River Valley)
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $54.94 (reg. $59.94)
Since 1996, Dumol has been “one of the superstar wineries of the entire California North Coast” according to Robert Parker, and for a time it was highly allocated to restaurants and their direct clients only. These days it seems silly to suggest that Dumol is under the radar any longer, but given the extraordinary quality of their Pinot, Chardonnay, and of course Syrah, they might still be undervalued. Dumol’s Russian River Valley Syrah is still highly allocated, and we are delighted to be able to offer some of this “French-styled stunner” (RP94pts) with a touch of age to you today.
Dumol has earned the effusive praise they have received since their first release, with Parker declaring them “one of my favorite wineries” and Galloni remarking that the “wines capture a middle ground built on balance above all else...rich and layered but never heavy.” The blessings of the 2012 vintage in California continue to shower down, with gorgeous, well-built wines like this one just now starting to show how good they can be. Winemaker Andy Smith (of Larkmead and others) declared 2012 one of their best ever thanks to the serendipitous combination of large crop and perfectly ripened berries with tremendous concentration. Thanks to Syrah’s late ripening tendencies, it got the full benefit of the warm, even harvest that year too.
At 5 years old, the RRV Syrah from Dumol has officially entered what will be a generous drinking window, offering up a delightful drinking experience for another 10 years, so make sure to grab enough to savor for many years to come. Cheers!
