2012 Eubea ‘Covo dei Brigante’ (Aglianico del Vulture)
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $18.94 (reg. $26.94)
Taking a page from the playbook of sommeliers and wine-buyers everywhere, we cannot recommend enough the quality and versatility of this Aglianico del Vulture. Eubea’s ‘Covo dei Brigante’ is a food-friendly, age-worthy southern Italian red brimming with character. A world apart from Barolo, this patch of Volcanic terroir in Basilicata, the arch of the boot, is home to some extraordinary Aglianico that match elegance and power in a way few wines can.
For under $20, this 93-points stunner is one of the best case-buys we’ve seen in a while, since you can set it aside for any meal but if you can forget it for a decade, even better!
Aglianico offers a food friendly profile that pairs magnificently with roasted meats, hard cheeses, and rich ragus. This is a real southern Italian aristocrat that would easily go for double or triple the price were it from Tuscany or Piedmont. While Campanian examples continue to rise in price thanks to collectors, those from Vulture are still phenomenal values. The Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner even expressed a preference for Aglianico del Vulture over that of Campania, as it reaches “a degree of richness, fullness and elegance that...is unique to Basilicata.”
Eubea’s ‘Covo’ offers enough dark brambly fruit, and mineral notes to make it enjoyable today, though the powerful Aglianico tannins will allow it to age a good while. You won’t find this 2012 Eubea anywhere else in the US since Aglianico del Vulture is still somehow under the radar, so now is the time jump on it!
