2012 Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino

On Sale $39.94 (reg. $48.94)
Few estates in Montalcino can claim as much history as Fattoria dei Barbi, but even with a track record over two centuries long, they might be making their best wine ever today. In 2012, Barbi absolutely knocked it out of the park with what is turning out to be a pretty great vintage. Galloni declared 2012 “one of the most promising young Brunello vintages I have tasted” while James Suckling declared that fans of Brunello “are in for a treat” with the 2012s. With large family holdings in some of the best parts of Montalcino, Fattoria dei Barbi’s flagship Brunello is also a stunning value under $40. This is a ripping good wine that will age for the next two decades!
Owner Stefano Cinelli Colombini is the heir to a family that dates back 700 years in Tuscany, and he has shepherded the estate to an enviable position in the Montalcino hierarchy. Barbi was one of the few producers that were around in the very beginning of Brunello 150 years ago, and thanks in part to that history, are today helping to lead the way in a new era of classicism. In contrast to the extracted, oak drenched Brunellos of recent decades. Barbi’s flagship wine is gorgeously elegant, with classic notes of “dried herb, tar and rose petal” (Wine Advocate). We recommend tucking a few of these away as it can only get better!
