"Not only are Felsina’s wines magnificent, they also remain exceedingly fairly priced in relative terms." - Antonio Galloni
If you need evidence of just how far Chianti has come in the past 30 years, Felsina is it. One of the most recognizable names in Tuscan wine (and a perennial favorite), Felsina produces reference point Sangiovese at every price. The Rancia is a single-vineyard legend and the pinnacle of what Felsina does. Since 1983 this Chianti Classico Riserva has been one of the top Chianti’s with aging potential of up to thirty years. Galloni declared Rancia “one the most fairly priced, cellar worthy wines in the world” and is on record suggesting you just grab a case every year because you really can’t beat it. As well respected as a top Brunello, Felsina’s Rancia is one of the great red wines of Italy, and at just shy of 40 bucks, an easy case buy for any Italophile.
The Rancia vineyard sits at 1,300 feet atop the Castelnuovo Berardenga subzone in Chianti Classico, and is planted with vines over 50 years old. Despite the use of new French oak, the Rancia is modern only in its sense of power; the flavor profile is unmistakably Tuscan delivering “dark cherry, plum, spice, tobacco, menthol and licorice” (Galloni). Regardless of vintage, the Wine Advocate writes that "you can count on this Chianti Classico for excellent quality."
A powerful, yet harmonious Chianti Classico Riserva, the Rancia is an easy candidate for the greatest value for cellar-worthy Sangiovese in Tuscany. Grab some for your collection now! Cheers!
