"...one of Morey-Saint-Denis' finest producers...Crown jewels excepting, prices remain reasonable and the only thing really stopping you and I from loading up is the small quantities that some of these are made in." - Neal Martin
Premier and Grand Cru vineyards so often get the attention in Burgundy that we forget the extraordinary lieux-dits that exist in many villages and what talented vignerons can do with them. Hubert Lignier, and his son Laurent, have built their reputation on small production bottlings from these unique parcels, and 2012 was the year to seek out their wines, with a “strong set of pure, sensual, quite intellectual” crus (Wine Advocate) and this village Morey is an age-worthy stunner!
Described as a “magical vintage for the Lignier family” (John Gilman), their 2012 Morey St Denis comes primarily from one particular lieu à dit planted in 1936, the Bas Chenevery. Just below Les Millandes 1er cru, this 80-year-old vineyard supplied fruit for Lignier’s original village Morey, and John Gilman described the 2012 as “absolutely classic”.
Those who seek out the rare and intriguing in Burgundy will want to check out this Morey, especially at the best price around!
Since the 1970s Hubert Lignier has fashioned “exemplary, occasionally heavenly wines that rank amongst the finest in Burgundy” (Wine Advocate) in no small part thanks to his strong focus on single parcels of old vines. While 2012 threw all sorts of challenges, according to John Gilman, this was a “vintage of legendary proportions at Domaine Hubert Lignier.” The low yields are evident in the dense and age-worthy structure of Lignier’s Morey, and will develop over a long and gentle arc, for two decades at least!
