"Pio Cesare’s straight Barolo doesn’t seem to get the attention or spotlight it deserves, but it has truly been one of Piedmont’s under the radar jewels for some time." - Antonio Galloni
Pio Cesare is one of Piedmont’s best large wineries, and year after year the Barolo DOCG is standout in their lineup. Galloni wrote that their 2012 “straight Barolo is pretty hard to top” while the Wine Advocate gave it 94pts and a resounding “hats off to Pio Cesare” for producing a “small miracle with the 2012 Barolo.”
Finding that balance of qualities between different crus reflected the skill of the winemaker and created better wine in all vintages. Owner Pio Boffa sources Nebbiolo from estate parcels in Serralunga, Monforte, and La Morra among others, and the Barolo DOCG is a benchmark for their entire estate.
Pio Cesare is a historic family winery in Piedmont, owning parcels in some of the finest vineyards in all of Italy. But like many in the 1980’s and 90s, their style tended towards the bigger and oakier, which ran counter to the traditional interpretation of Nebbiolo. Fortunately today, Pio Cesare is earning no shortage of critical acclaim for their return to a “more classic style of winemaking” (Galloni), which is evidenced in this gorgeously elegant Barolo. Like all good Barolo it will benefit tremendously with some patience, but it’s already pretty darn delicious today. Cheers!
